Make brushing a breeze

All children suffer from tangled hair. From wriggling in their sleep to wearing rubber swimming hats, knotty hair is guaranteed. Hair tangles can be frustrating and have to be delicately handled to avoid damaging hair fibres. A soft approach and a little preventative care can make brushing a breeze.

Get regular hair cuts

Getting your child’s hair cut frequently keeps it in optimum shape. Even if your little one wants to grow their hair long, regular trims will only take off the damaged ends. Getting rid of the split ends will help make combing easy.

Keep hair moisturised

Ensure that you pick products that contain healthy moisturising oils. Original Sprout products have a special, unique blend that uses ultra moisturising ingredients such as calendula oil and rosemary. These ingredients help complement your hair’s natural oils and moisturising properties. Hydrated hair is more pliable and resilient, and naturally withstands damage and fire that contributes to tangles.

Brushing and styling products

When you brush wet hair it can cause it stretch and cause additional stress to the hair shaft. When hair is wet, spritz on a detangler to protect the hair while you brush and style it. Using a wide tooth comb, work from the bottom to tease out any tangles. The best detanglers will not only get tangles out, but add extra moisture to prevent fizz and protect your hair. Using a good leave-in conditioner or hair oil can also help prevent moisture loss and smooth the cuticle so that the hairs don’t tangle.

You can help reduce tangles by popping hair into a loose braid before bed or exposure to wind or exercise. Keep hair hydrated and trimmed and make brushing a breeze!

How to style your child’s hair

Toddlers and children get to an age where they love to have their hair styled. Girl or boy, short or long hair, there is plenty you can do to show your child how to style their locks! At Original Sprout, we know styling your child’s hair can be quick, easy and low maintenance yet still have the desired effect. Here are our top tips on how to style your child’s hair

1. Use a gentle product

Children with short hair love to create spikes or funky styles. Hairsprays and gels that are designed for adults may be too harsh for your little one’s sensitive scalp and hair, so it’s best to use a product that is gentle on skin. Original Sprout’s Classic Hair Gel has a gentle PH, contains natural ingredients yet still provides maximum hold for all those spiky hairstyles that kids love.

2. Fight tangles and knots

Before styling your child’s hair, give it a good brush through and get rid of all those pesky tangles and knots. Use a flexible brush that has soft bristles and is specifically designed for detangling children’s hair. You could also try a Leave-In Conditioner or our Miracle Detangler.

3. Use soft hair bands

Elastic bands and cheap rubber hair bands can damage hair by causing split ends and knots. Try and find hair ties that have a fabric covering and are the same material the whole way round (the metal clips can catch on hair). Springy soft fabric ties, or silicone bands are great for young hair, and are easy to put in, and take out.

4. Calm curls and frizz

If your little one is blessed with beautiful curls, frizz often comes hand-in-hand. To really accentuate the curls and tame the frizz and flyaways, try a product such as our Curl Calmer, it leaves hair glossy while keeping curls, curly!

5. Accessorise

There are hundreds of ways you can accessorise your child’s hair from Alice Bands, clips, ribbons, bows and braids. Make sure whatever you use in your child’s hair is safe and doesn’t have any sharp bits.

How to look after your skin and hair in winter

Changes in the weather can can cause dryness to yours (and your baby’s) skin and hair. While the weather is still chilly, it’s a good idea to implement care regimes to ensure as the weather gets warmer this spring, your skin and hair is in the best possible condition.

1. Use sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner

When looking for a moisturising and nourishing shampoo and conditioner, make sure you pick something that is sulphate-free. Sulphates can strip the hair and scalp of natural oils and can cause irritations like dryness and itching. This is especially important for babies too, because they need these oils to help reduce cradle cap and dry scalp. Choose a shampoo and conditioner that contain natural ingredients and no parabens or sulphates to ensure your hair and scalp are healthy and itch-free!

2. Choose an ultra-moisturising skin cream

Choosing a body cream for your family can be overwhelming, with so much available on the market. It is a good idea to pick something that is free from common toxic ingredients, to reduce the chance of irritation and inflammation. However, you also want an effective product providing ultra-moisturising and soothing benefits. Environmental stressors such as pollution and the weather can damage the skin, so look for protective ingredients such as natural zinc, or calendula to improve the skins ability to protect itself. Find these extracts in our Scrumptious Baby Cream and Reef Safe Sunscreen!

3. Stay hydrated

The ultimate way to look after your skin and hair is to stay hydrated. Hydration is good for your all-round health but especially good for maintaining healthy skin and hair. Hydrated skin is smooth and hydrated hair is soft and glossy. Up your water intake, and eat water-rich foods such as watermelon and cucumber. Use hydrating skin and hair care products too. Panthenol is an ingredient that penetrates through the skin and delivers moisture to cells, it’s safe for use on babies sensitive skin, too!

What are the benefits of Vegan skincare and haircare?

Baby kissing mother on cheek

It’s Veganuary, a 31 day campaign to encourage people to go vegan for January, and hopefully beyond. You can take steps to Veganism by cutting out meat and dairy, but also by choosing vegan skincare and vegan haircare products.

Original Sprout products are 100% vegan and contain no nasty chemicals that can sometimes be found in other skin and haircare products. So what are the benefits of using Vegan cosmetics?

1. Good to animals

Vegan skincare and vegan haircare products do not use any animal derivatives that appear in some items. Non-vegan ingredients include squalene and lanolin though there are vegan versions of these products so be sure to check when you’re making a new purchase. Vegan products, like the whole Original Sprout range, are also cruelty free, meaning they do not get tested on animals, at all.

2. Better for the environment

Vegan products are usually 100% natural and organic which means they are good for the environment. They break down into non-harmful components after use and can be reused by nature. Our packaging is recyclable and uses #2 FDA, Phthalate Free Regulated Plastic.

3. Rich in antioxidants and vitamins

Ingredients taken from plants are rich in vitamins and minerals. They contain lots of natural oils and antioxidants meaning they help to repair and care for soft skin and hair. Vegan products contain fewer ingredients that are likely to irritate skin.

4. Original Sprout ingredients

At Original Sprout, we ensure all of our products are 100% cruelty free and vegan. We don’t use any insect attractors, such as honey or soda fragrances, and we steer well clear of any chemicals that can cause health concerns. You can find our full breakdown of ingredients on each of our product pages.
